Preparing for a cake smash photoshoot in Auckland is actually very simple — and we guide you through everything.

But knowing a few key things ahead of time can make the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable.

Choose the right time of day

The most important factor is your baby’s mood.

  • schedule after a nap
  • make sure baby is well fed
  • avoid times when they’re usually tired
A happy baby makes the biggest difference to your photos.

What cake works best?

Simple cakes photograph best.

  • 5–6 inch size
  • soft icing (easy to smash)
  • light colours or neutral tones

Avoid:

  • very dark colours (can stain)
  • hard fondant icing
  • overly bright artificial colours

What should baby wear?

Outfits should feel comfortable and simple.

  • rompers or soft outfits
  • neutral or pastel colours
  • barefoot works beautifully

Bring a few essentials

We recommend bringing:

  • wipes or towels
  • a change of clothes
  • snacks your baby likes
  • a favourite toy if needed

What if my baby doesn’t smash the cake?

This is very common — and completely okay.

Some babies dive straight in, others take their time.

We gently guide the session so we still capture:

  • expressions and reactions
  • playful moments
  • beautiful portraits

Relax and enjoy it

The best thing you can do is stay relaxed.

Your baby will feed off your energy — and when it feels calm and fun, the photos naturally follow.
