Preparing for your family photoshoot does not need to feel stressful.
The best family portraits usually happen when everyone feels comfortable, relaxed and gently guided. A little planning before the session can make the whole experience feel much easier.
Start with the right mindset
Your family photoshoot does not need to be perfect. Children do not need to smile on command, and everyone does not need to behave perfectly for the whole session.
The goal is to capture connection, personality and this season of your family as it is now.
Choose outfits ahead of time
Leaving outfits until the last minute can make the day feel rushed.
Try choosing clothing a few days before your session so you have time to check that everything fits, feels comfortable and works together as a family palette.
Soft neutral tones, simple textures and coordinated colours usually photograph beautifully. You can read our full guide on what to wear for a family photoshoot in Auckland.
Prepare children gently
Children usually do better when they know what to expect, but not when too much pressure is placed on them.
You might say something simple like:
This helps the session feel less like a performance and more like a shared experience.
Make sure everyone is fed and rested
Hungry or overtired children can find photo sessions harder, so try to keep the day as calm as possible before your shoot.
If your session is later in the day, a proper snack or meal beforehand can make a big difference. For younger children, try to avoid scheduling too close to nap time if possible.
Bring simple essentials
You do not need to bring much, but a few small things can help:
- water bottles
- non-messy snacks for children
- a spare outfit for very young children
- hairbrush or comb
- wipes or tissues
- a favourite comfort item if needed
Try to avoid snacks that stain clothing or faces, such as chocolate, berries or bright-coloured lollies.
Do not worry if children are shy or energetic
Every child is different. Some arrive shy and need time to warm up. Others arrive full of energy and movement.
Both are completely normal. A good family session allows space for children to settle, move, laugh and be themselves.

Trust gentle direction
You do not need to know how to pose.
We guide parents, children and family groups throughout the session so you know where to stand, how to hold each other and what to do with your hands.
The aim is for everything to feel natural while still being beautifully composed.
Allow enough time before and after
Try not to schedule too many things directly around your session.
Arriving rushed can affect how everyone feels. Giving yourself extra time helps the experience start calmly and gives children a chance to settle.
What happens after your session?
After your photoshoot, your images are prepared for your viewing appointment.
This is when you see your portraits and choose the images, albums or wall art you would love to keep.
