What to Wear for a Family Photoshoot in Auckland

A simple guide to choosing outfits that feel natural, timeless and beautifully coordinated for your family photography session.

One of the most common questions families ask before their session is simple: what should we wear for our family photoshoot?

The good news is that you do not need anything complicated. The outfits that photograph best are usually the ones that feel simple, comfortable and softly coordinated.

Start with soft, neutral tones

For family photography, soft neutral colours usually photograph the most beautifully. Creams, whites, beige, soft greys, warm browns and muted earthy tones all work well in a studio setting.

These colours keep the focus on your faces, your connection and the emotion in the portraits, rather than drawing attention to the clothing first.

Helpful tip: If you are not sure where to start, choose one or two soft base colours and build everyone’s outfits around those tones.

Coordinate, don’t match exactly

The goal is not for everyone to wear the exact same thing. Instead, aim for outfits that sit well together.

For example, one family member might wear cream, another soft beige, another light grey, and another a muted warm tone. This creates variety while still looking connected in the final images.

Avoid bold patterns, logos and very bright colours

Large logos, neon tones and strong patterns can distract from the people in the image. They also tend to date more quickly.

Simple outfits with soft texture usually work much better — linen, knits, cotton and natural fabrics all photograph beautifully.

Think about comfort as much as style

If an outfit feels uncomfortable, stiff or unlike you, it often shows in the photos. This is especially true for children.

Choose pieces that allow movement, feel soft to wear, and help everyone relax into the session. Comfortable families nearly always photograph more naturally.

Keep the whole family in mind

Try laying everyone’s outfits together before the session. This makes it much easier to spot whether one colour feels too strong or whether something does not quite fit with the overall look.

Think about your outfits as one palette rather than a set of separate choices.

What photographs best in a studio family session?

In our Auckland studio, family portraits tend to look best when the clothing feels soft, layered and timeless. Flowy dresses, textured knits, simple shirts, neutral trousers and bare feet often work beautifully.

The aim is for the styling to support the feeling of the portrait — warm, connected and natural — rather than overpower it.

Should parents and children dress formally?

Not necessarily. Some families love a more refined look, while others prefer something softer and more relaxed.

What matters most is that the outfits feel cohesive and still feel like you. A polished but comfortable look usually works best.

Still unsure what to wear?

You do not have to figure it out on your own. We guide families before their session so the styling feels simple and stress-free.
