If you’ve never done a newborn photoshoot before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what actually happens.
The good news is — newborn sessions are designed to feel calm, slow and guided. You don’t need to perform or prepare anything complicated.
Here’s exactly what to expect.
Arriving at the studio
When you arrive, everything is already set up for your session — including wraps, styling and the shooting space.
You’ll have time to settle in, feed your baby if needed, and relax before we begin.
Feeding and settling your baby
Newborn sessions are completely baby-led. This means we follow your baby’s needs rather than a strict schedule.
- time for feeding
- time for cuddles
- time to settle
If your baby needs a break, we pause. This is all part of the session.
Wrapped newborn portraits
We usually begin with wrapped baby portraits. Wrapping helps babies feel secure and comfortable, making it easier for them to settle into sleep.
This is where many of the soft, peaceful images are created.
Parent and family photos
You will also be gently guided into parent and family portraits.
You don’t need to worry about posing — we guide everything in a natural way so it feels comfortable and relaxed.
Sibling photos, if included
If siblings are part of your session, we usually photograph them earlier while they are fresh and engaged.
We keep this part simple and pressure-free.
How long does the session take?
Newborn sessions typically take around 2 to 3 hours.
This allows time for:
- feeding and settling
- multiple setups
- parent and family images
The session is never rushed.
After the photoshoot
After your session, your images are carefully prepared for your viewing appointment.
This is when you return to the studio to see your photos and choose what you love.
Your viewing appointment
At your viewing, you’ll see your images for the first time.
You can then choose:
- your favourite digital images
- albums
- wall art for your home
There is no pressure — you only choose what feels right for you.
Do I need to prepare anything?
Not much at all.
We guide you beforehand so you know what to bring and how to prepare, but overall the session is designed to feel easy and supported.

Final thoughts
The most important thing to know is that your newborn session is not about perfection.
It’s about creating a calm space where your baby can be themselves — and capturing this short, special stage in a natural and timeless way.
