How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot

Simple, practical tips to help your newborn session feel calm, relaxed and beautifully natural.

Preparing for your newborn photoshoot doesn’t need to feel overwhelming.

In fact, the more relaxed you are going into the session, the more natural and beautiful your photographs will feel. Here’s everything you need to know to feel confident and ready.

Keep your morning slow and relaxed

One of the best things you can do is simply allow extra time.

Newborn sessions are not rushed, and there’s no need to stress about being perfectly on schedule. Give yourself space for feeds, outfit changes and those unpredictable newborn moments.

Helpful tip: Plan to leave earlier than you think you need — it removes pressure before you even arrive.

Feed your baby before the session

A full baby is usually a sleepy baby.

We often recommend feeding your baby just before or even when you arrive at the studio. This helps them settle into a calm, relaxed state for the session.

That said, there’s always time for additional feeds during the shoot — everything is baby-led.

Dress baby in something easy to remove

Simple outfits make a big difference.

Dress your baby in something loose and easy to take off, like a zip-up onesie. This helps avoid waking them when transitioning into wraps or poses.

Don’t worry about bringing props

You don’t need to bring anything unless you’d like to.

At Photo Hive, we provide wraps, blankets and styling pieces that are carefully chosen to create soft, timeless images.

If you do have something meaningful you’d like included, you’re always welcome to bring it along.

Keep outfits simple for parents

For parents, soft neutral tones work best.

Creams, whites, beige and light earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection rather than the clothing.

Expect breaks — and embrace them

Newborn sessions include time for feeding, settling and cuddles.

These pauses are part of the process, not something to worry about. Some of the most beautiful moments happen in between the posed shots.

You don’t need a “perfect” baby

This is one of the biggest worries parents have — and it’s completely unnecessary.

Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the whole time or behave in a certain way. Every session is guided gently around your baby’s needs.

Trust the process

You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do.

We guide you through everything — from how to hold your baby to how to relax into natural moments together.

What happens after your session?

After your shoot, you’ll return to the studio for your viewing appointment.

This is where you’ll see your finished images and choose the ones you love most — whether that’s digital images, an album or wall art.
